Dazzling Dinosaurs!

a dinosaurs/prehistoric animals thematic unit

Grrrrrr! There is something fascinating about these mystical creatures, isn't there? My children LOVE the dinosaur unit not only because they are enthralled with these prehistoric reptiles, but also because their names are so impressive and fun to say! I have compiled projects which we complete during this unit as well as other ideas found on the web to provide you a unit of prehistorical proportions! So, what are you waiting for? "Dig" in and start your "dazzling dino" hunt!

Literacy Connections

Dinosaur Vocabulary Charts

As always, our class enjoys interactive writing with vocabulary charts. During our dinosaur unit, I focus on the four most easily recognized dinosaurs. We choose a "cool dino of the day" each day to write about. I call quiet children to be a "guest writer" and write the sounds they hear in the words as we label. With this theme, I limit each dino to 5 labels since many of them repeat (tail, legs, feet, claws, etc.) The kids LOVE voting for a cool dino, and I love the writing practice!

Cool Dino of the Week

After the week is finished, I have the children get their names from our word wall and we vote to see which dino is the "coolest" according to my class. This year, Tyrannosaurus Rex won by a landslide! Most of the kids admitted that they thought he was the coolest because he was so scary.

Art and Craft Projects

Fossil Dough

The highlight of our dinosaur unit for my kids is making their own fossils. I mix up a huge batch of "fossil dough" for this project using the following recipe:

2 1/2 c. flour
2 1/2 c. used coffee grounds
1 1/2 c. salt
1 c. sand
up to 1 c. water

How to make it:

Mix coffee grounds, salt, and sand. Gradually stir in water until mixture holds together. Use as little water as possible to speed drying process. The more water you use, the longer it takes to dry. This recipe is good because when dry, the fossil looks like a rock.

I place a heaping spoonful on a paper plate and let the kids flatten it into a hamburger patty type shape. I let them pull a plastic dinosaur out of a bag (so it is a surprise) and place it gently on top of the fossil patty. Then I instruct them to press down on it so that it imprints into the dough.

The fossils take 4-5 days to completely dry. I let the dinos sit in the dough while they dry so that the imprint doesn't collapse. The result? Dino-riffic fossils!

Terrific Triceratops

A cute project is just 4 parts away!

To complete this project, you will need:

glue,
scissors,
a rolly-eye,
muffin cup liner,
construction paper,
rotini or spiral-shaped pasta,
and triceratops pattern.

Directions

1. Have children trace triceratops pattern and cut out.
2.Fold muffin cup liner in half and glue vertically behind triceratops head.
3. Glue rolly-eye on face.
4. Glue 3 pieces of pasta as horns. Roar!!

I used our Triceratops to decorate our door with the caption
"We're 'roaring' to learn in Mrs. Wilt's K Class!"

Dinosaur Rubbings

When learning about dinosaurs, we discuss the fact that no one really knows what the skin of a dinosaur was like since we only have fossils remaining today. I read my children the following poem, and we use textured items to create dinosaur "skins".

We lay buttons, feathers, etc. under a picture of dinosaur and use the flat edge of crayons to rub the top of them. What's left is a textured picture-perfect dinosaur. We cut them out and mount them on construction paper to display in the hallway.

In case the photo is illegible, here is the text of the poem.

What kind of skin did a dinosaur wear?
Did it have some feathers?Did it have some hair?

What were the colors it wore in those days?
Were they bright reds and pinks?
Or cool blues and grays?

How did it feel to touch dinosaur skin?
Was it bumpy and thick? Or slick, smooth, and thin?

How do we know what a dinosaur wore?
We imagine and color- that's what crayons are for!

Dino Ditty, Ditty Dum Ditty Do

(Tune of "Do Wah Diddy Diddy")

Here he comes just a stomping
with his feet,(Stomp.)
Singing "Dino ditty,
ditty dum ditty do." (Clap.)
Searching all around for
something good to eat, (Hand over brow.)
Singing "Dino ditty,
ditty dum ditty do." (Clap.)
He's huge. [He's huge.]
He's strong. [He's strong.]
(Stretch out arms; then
bend elbows and make fist)
He's huge, he's strong,
won't be hungry very long.
(Repeat arm motions;
then shake finger "no.")

"Dino ditty, ditty
dum ditty do." (Clap.)
"Dino ditty, ditty
dum ditty do." (Clap.)

Book-osaurus

(Tune of "Frere Jacques")

"Allosaurus, Allosaurus,"
I said when I was one.
I said when I was one.
"Allosaurus, Allosaurus,
How fast could you run?"
How fast could you run?"

"Stegosaurus, Stegosaurus,"
I said when I was two.
I said when I was two.
Stegosaurus, Stegosaurus,
Were you green or blue?"
Were you green or blue?"

"Brontosaurus, Brontosaurus,"
I said when I was three.
I said when I was three.
"Brontosaurus, Brontosaurus,
I said when I was three.
I said when I was three.

"Triceratops, Triceratops,"
I said when I was four.
I said when I was four.
"Triceratops, Triceratops,
I wonder, did you snore?"
I wonder, did you snore?"

"Tyrannosaurus, Tyrannosaurus,"
I said when I was five.
I said when I was five.
"Tyrannosaurus, Tyrannosaurus,
"I'm glad you're not alive."
"I'm glad you're not alive."

I'm a Mean Old Dinosaur

(Tune of "I'm a Little Teapot")

I'm a mean old dinosaur,
(Make a mean frown.)
Big and tall.
(Reach wide and high.)
Here is my tail
(Point to imaginary tail.)
And here is my claw.
(Curl fingers on hands.)
When I get all hungry,
(Rub tummy.)
I just growl.
(Growl the word "growl with hands around mouth.)
Look out kids–
(Reach out arms.)
I'm on the prowl!
(Lunge left and right.)

I'm Bringing Home a Baby Dinosaur

(Tune of "I'm Bringing Home a Baby Bumblebee")

I'm bringing home a baby dinosaur.
Won't my mommy fall right through the floor.
I'm bringing home a baby dinosaur.
Ouch! He squished me!

I'm bringing home a baby dinosaur.
Won't my mommy hide behind the door.
I'm bringing home a baby dinosaur.
Tromp! Tromp! Tromp! Tromp!

Dinosaur Action Song

(Tune of "This Old Man")

Dinosaur, touch the floor.
Shake your tail and give a roar.
You're the finest looking dinosaur that I have ever seen.
Please come sing and dance with me.

Dinosaur, show me four.
Turn around and face the door.
You're the finest looking dinosaur that I have ever seen.
Please come sing and dance with me.

Dinosaur, stretch once more.
Go to sleep, but please don't snore.
You're the finest looking dinosaur that I have ever seen.
Please come sing and dance with me.

Dinosaurs of Long Ago

The dinosaurs lived long ago, and walked like this, and that.
(slow heavy walk movement)
Some were large
(stretch hands upward)
and some were small.
(crouch down)
Some liked water
(swimming motions)
and some walked on land
(stomp feet)
Some had wings that flapped and flapped
(flap arms)
Some had long necks, that stretched and stretched.
(hand on neck stretching upward)
The meanest, rudest one of all was ferocious Tyrannosaurus Rex.
(feet apart, hands claw-like, scowl and growl)
These were the dinosaurs of long ago.
Goodness gracious, where did they go?

One Friendly Dinosaur

One friendly dinosaur wanted to play peek-a-boo.
She found another, and then there were two.
Two friendly dinosaurs looked behind a tree.
They found another, and then there were three.
Three friendly dinosaurs went to find some more.
They found another, and then there were four.
Four friendly dinosaurs in the water did dive.
They found another, and then there were five.
Five friendly dinosaurs played in the sun.

They all ran to hide; now there are none

Dino Song

(Tune: I'm a Little Teapot)

I'm a Brontosaurus with four feet.
I eat plants, but don't eat meat.
Known as Thunder Lizard, that is true.
'Cause when I walked, the earth just shook.

Chorus:

Dinosaurs, dinosaurs, that we know.
Some were large, some were small.
Fossils tell us this is so,
'Cause I've not seen one after all.
Tyrannosaurus Rex's my name.
King of the dinosaurs, that I am.
I make many run and hide.
'Cause I'm mean and like to fight.
I'm Triceratops, with three horns.
A big, big head, and frilly bones.
I'm a fierce fighter, on four feet.
But I eat plants, 'cause they are neat.
